Platform reporting. A platform reports you to HMRC when you make 30 or more sales, or take more than €2,000 (about £1,700), on it in a calendar year. Each platform counts separately. "Close" means you're within about 20% of either line.
Trading or not. Buying pairs to sell on for a profit is trading. Selling your own used things usually isn't, however many you sell, so being reported doesn't on its own mean you owe tax.
The £1,000 trading allowance. If your trading sales across every platform come to £1,000 or less in a tax year, you don't need to tell HMRC. Above that, you register for Self Assessment and pay tax on either your profit or your sales minus £1,000, whichever is lower. How much tax that means depends on your other income.
Common questions
Do I have to pay tax on reselling trainers in the UK?
If you buy pairs to sell on for a profit, that's trading. The first £1,000 of sales in a tax year is covered by the trading allowance. Above that you'll usually need to register for Self Assessment and pay tax on your profit.
Do I pay tax on selling my own old shoes?
Usually not. Selling your own used belongings isn't trading, so there's no income tax on it, even if a platform reports you to HMRC. Capital Gains Tax only comes in if a single item sells for more than £6,000 at a gain.
When do platforms report me to HMRC?
When you make 30 or more sales, or take more than €2,000 (about £1,700), on one platform in a calendar year. eBay, Vinted, Depop, StockX and GOAT all report.
Is the £1,000 trading allowance based on sales or profit?
Sales. It's your total turnover before costs, across every platform, in the tax year (6 April to 5 April).
Can I claim the £1,000 allowance and my costs?
No, it's one or the other. Take the allowance if your costs are under £1,000; claim your real costs if they're more.
When is the Self Assessment deadline?
Register by 5 October after the end of the tax year. The online return and any tax are due by 31 January. For the 2026/27 tax year, that's 5 October 2027 and 31 January 2028.
Rules as of September 2026. This is general information, not tax advice. For your own situation, check GOV.UK or speak to an accountant.
